How to Turn a Small Bathroom Remodel Into a Luxurious Spa Retreat

Unfortunately, not all of us are blessed with those big houses you see on Pinterest or Instagram. Some of us have big dreams and ideas, but not a lot of space to work with. That’s the reality of the situation, but that’s not to say we have to give up on our ideas! Let’s make the best out of a small bathroom remodel together and explore how we can turn it into a “Bali at home”.

Measure Your Space

The first thing we’re going to do is take a look at our bathroom in it’s current condition. Yes, it’s small – but how small is it really? Before we demolish anything let’s take measurements and sketch out a floor plan. Youre’ going to need:

  • Tape measure
  • Pencil
  • Graph paper or a sketchbook

Measure overall dimensions of your bathroom. That means you have to measure lenght and widht of each wall from corner to corner, as well as the height of your bathroom. Next, measure the dimensions of existing fixtures and features within the bathroom. This can include the bathtub, toilet, sinky and vanity, windows and doors. Sketch the location of each fixture on your graph paper. Identify any obstacles within the bathroom, such as pipes, electrical outlets, or switches. Measure their distance from nearby walls and fixtures.

Take note of the existing plumbing and electrical wiring. Relocating fixtures or adding new ones may require adjustments to these systems and we advise against it.

Check local building codes and permit requirements. Some renovations, especially those involving structural changes or plumbing, may require permits, so it’s essential to be aware of these regulations from the outset (that’s why we advise against it, as it may be more hassle than it’s worth).

Now that we have the measurements down, what can we do with this space? Browse potential ideas with similar bathroom measurements on the internet, or just be creative with your vision. Consider your personal preferences and needs. Are you aiming for a minimalist, modern spa aesthetic?

What is Your Budget?

Research the average costs of materials, labor, and fixtures in your area. This will give you a ballpark figure for your project. Decide which elements of your remodel are non-negotiable and where you might be willing to compromise to stay within budget. Maybe you can get away with buying a cheap bathroom vanity, but don’t skimp on quality shower on faucets. It’s also always smart to factor in a contingency fund of about 10-20% of your budget for unexpected expenses. You don’t have to spend it, just have it handy.

Small Bathroom Remodel Tips You’re Going to Love

Let’s get into the good stuff.

You’re here because we’re the best when it comes to remodeling inspiration, so we handpicked some amazing ideas for your next small bathroom remodel. How do you like these?

Shiplap Bathroom

Shiplap bathroom and white cabinets
“Bring a touch of coastal charm to your bathroom with shiplap bathroom walls and white shaker cabinets.

Switching up your walls into a shiplap style paired with beautiful white vanity can be a big game-changer for small bathrooms. If you’re not familiar, shiplap is a type of wooden board often used as wall paneling. You can often find these in coastal cities, so if you’re into those vibes – we say go for it!

Decide whether you want to install shiplap only on the lower half of the walls, creating a wainscoting effect, or go for a full-wall installation. While white shiplap is a classic choice, you can also paint it in different colors to match your bathroom’s theme. Soft pastels, coastal blues, or earthy tones can add personality to the space.

We actually made a full guide on designing a shiplap bathroom so go ahead and read it if you’re liking this idea!

Scandi Bathroom

We talked a lot about Scandiavian design on our blog. But Scandi is not just for kitchens – this style is PERFECT for a small bathroom remodel! Scandi bathroom design is characterized by its minimalist, functional, and clean aesthetic.

How to do it? Start with a neutral color palette dominated by whites, soft grays, and muted pastels. Do this for floors and walls, and if you want vanities. You’re also gonna need a lot of natural materials (or at least faux nature). Choose simple and sleek bathroom fixtures with clean lines. Keep accessories to a minimum. Opt for open shelving with a few carefully chosen items like folded towels, decorative containers, or potted plants. The goal is to maintain a sense of openness and simplicity. You should also incorporate indoor plants like snake plants, ferns, or succulents.

Get playful with everything!

Modern Minimalist

Minimalism is always great to save money. But we can’t deny that it looks good. Stick to a neutral color scheme, choose white or gray vanities, modern, sleek fixtures with clean lines.

As with the Scandi bathroom, keep accessories to a minimum. We don’t want to overcrowd our already small space.

Now for the tip of the day: use extra large frameless mirrors in this kind of bathroom design. Do this to visually expand the space and reflect light. What else is there? Keep everything to a minimum and save money while you’re at it.

Mediterranean Bathroom

This is what you want – a true oasis that will make you feel like queen Cleopatra when you’re flossing your teeth. You’ve probably seen to many movies set in Spain, Italy or Greece and now you want to transport there.

Well, now you can if you follow these tips. For a color palette chose one that includes warm, earthy tones such as terracotta, deep blues, sandy beige, and olive green. Incorporate mosaic tiles with intricate patterns and rich colors for the flooring or as an accent in the shower area. Consider terra cotta or stone flooring to mimic the rustic look of Mediterranean homes. If possible, design arched doorways and windows.

Simple as that, right? Not really, plus it’s expensive. But oh my God does it look good!

Boho-Inspired Bathroom

If you love your plants, this one is for you. And it’s the last one on our list by the way. You’re gonna need lots of plants. LOTS!

Boho is short for Bohemina and it’s all about embracing a free-spirited, eclectic, and artistic aesthetic. Use a diverse and rich color palette that includes bold, jewel tones like deep blues, rich purples, earthy oranges, and vibrant greens. Incorporate various patterns such as tribal prints, Moroccan tiles, paisley, or floral designs.

Put your favorite plants everywhere and combine with other natural materials like wood, wicker, and rattan for furniture and accessories.
