How Covid Changed Our Shopping Behavior

Last year was challenging for everyone and our behavior changed in ways no one could have predicted. Our daily routine moved to another level and so did our way of spending money. Instead of going on vacation, many opted for a kitchen renovation or adding another bathroom. Our needs came first and maybe in the end, was a good wake-up call.

In 2019 when life looked a lot different, there was a broad range of possibilities for spending money, from distant travels to concerts and other types of social gatherings. With the COVID-19 pandemic, our routine changed. Even those who disliked online shopping at first had no other option but to start making purchases on the web.

It comes as no surprise that working from home has its positive sides. One of these is that you can feel relaxed in your kitchen while working on big projects. But if being home more than usual gives you more input on your home’s flaws. Maybe adding another bathroom was a pretty good idea after all. The good news is that it’s never too late to upgrade.

A new life in the suburbs

More space means more comfort and comfort was a dominant theme in 2020. The suburbs have never looked more appealing. That feeling of freedom you can’t get in a big city during lockdown left a lot of people wondering: are big cities worth it?

“The primary reason is that COVID-19 has led a segment of home buyers to desire larger homes and to move to the suburbs,” said Rose Quint, assistant VP/survey research for the Washington, DC-based NAHB.

Several key features of new U.S. homes, including their average size and the number of bathrooms, reversed their course in 2020. Besides adding more bathrooms, people opted for double vanity sinks as well since they are more practical when sharing a bathroom.

Kitchen work zones are the future

A functional kitchen can be a lot more than a work triangle. Having kitchen work zones for different activities appears to be a trend in kitchen remodeling. Adding more kitchen cabinets and creating space for work, cooking, and homework is a great family investment.

People showed greater interest in outdoor kitchens connected to the main kitchen. This type of open space makes a home larger and adds more comfort and convenience. Double kitchen sinks and pantry cabinets have been among the most desired features in new homes as well. These kitchen updates make sense as families are spending time at home all at the same time. That’s why their need for more space and functionality became so obvious.

Last year was pretty difficult and it changed our daily routine in so many ways. Our behavior had to adapt to new circumstances and new routines had to emerge. We’ve been renovating our kitchens to become a place for everyone, we’ve updated our vanity cabinets, added pantry cabinets. Our instincts have gotten us through the challenges we were unaware of before. Life will go back to normal but the smart investments we’ve made during these hard times will still have value. We’re happy the American people gave thought to tomorrow and how our lives can become better.
