Under the Tuscan… Kitchen? These Features Will Help You Design Your Tuscan Kitchen

Whenever I think of Italy, I always associate it with food, the kitchen, and the Tuscan sun. And I don’t think I’m alone on this since so many homeowners nowadays request Tuscan-style kitchen design. If the more rustic version of Italian kitchen designs appeals to you, then you might be a fan of Tuscan design. Although it’s more popular in Europe, this style is beginning to gain a foothold in the kitchens of the United States. Before we begin with the design, let’s find out about its history.

History of Tuscan-style kitchen

Across the rolling hills and cypress tree panoramas, under the sun of central Italy, the Tuscan style was born. To help to keep homes cool during the hot summers, and mainly because of its availability, a stone was the main feature in this style. Italians are also very respectful of their past, so they’ve purposely been leaving stone unplastered, brick walls exposed, and cabinetry charmingly aged so that new generations can appreciate both their past and craftsmanship.

But, due to modern movements, much of the old design has been changed. New materials such as linoleum or steel have become incorporated into this style. Antique wooden furniture that once dominated the whole design was replaced by simple and geometric designs. This provided designers with more mediums to work with. Combining these new elements with the longstanding Italian excellence in design caused the new style to quickly gain in popularity. Here are a few quick ways you can incorporate the Tuscan style into your kitchen.

Here I always picture the Italian grandmas cooking meals for their big families and wanting to have plentiful cabinetry for their pots and pans and other supplies, as well as the food. Thus, cabinets occupy the majority of Tuscan-style kitchen wall space. Woodwork is very vital in Tuscany, so don’t be afraid to splurge on your cabinetry. If your kitchen is not as big, there are many other ways to incorporate Tuscan décor or colors that will give you that flair.

Italians are known for having a large extended family. So, it’s important for them to have an impressively sized kitchen, often with larger stoves and ranges. The kitchen is truly the heart of every Italian home, and they live for their Sunday feast. Appliances in your Tuscan-style kitchen will usually be sleek, stainless steel finished units, copper range hoods, or even appliance covers with Tuscan art themes.

A tile backsplash behind the stove is an excellent way to impart the Tuscan style to the kitchen. The backsplash is a very important component of the Tuscan style. It’s the perfect way to introduce that famous natural stone look and also incorporate the popular Tuscan style colors (we’ll talk about later) into your kitchen design. I would suggest using marble stone or terracotta, not just as your backsplash but anywhere it could work. Use your imagination on this one. It’s also important to note that rounded archways (if possible) for entrances or millwork for the walls, not to mention limewashed walls, will add finishing touches to the perfect Tuscan-style kitchen.

Terracotta tiles are original Tuscan products, so that’s always a safe bet. But you can always go for travertine tiles (which is a natural stone product, unlike the terracotta which is man-made). Travertine tiles will bring out that old look on your Tuscan-style flooring because of its imperfections (variegated surface, pits, etc.) Another option is to install distressed wide plank flooring, which will also provide old-timey charm.

The greens of the sea, the blues of the sky, the yellow of the sun, and the reds of the earth- is there more to say? As you can already tell, the colors used in Tuscan design reflect the use of natural colors found in the region. If you desire a more earthy, natural, and antique kitchen style, then turn to Tuscan style as the main inspiration in your kitchen design.

Not all of us have that bright, Mediterranean sunshine to naturally illuminate our kitchen. But, with extra lighting options like recessed ceiling lights, hanging pendants, and under-counter lighting, we can always mimic it.

Corbels, columns, and molding embody this style and are popular in Tuscan architecture. Any detailed or raised paneling also fits this style. Also, decorative items that will amp up this Tuscan style feel are:

  • Clay pottery filled with herbs such as basil, rosemary, and oregano,
  • Colorful ceramic bottles filled with olive oil, countertop wine racks, woven strands of garlic,
  • Baskets filled with fresh vegetables.

With these seven features, you’ll not just warm up the heart of your home. You’ll create a space that encourages family togetherness and design a kitchen that will never go out of style.
