We’ve all been there. You’re shopping for something online and even though it looks great on your computer screen, when your item arrives it just doesn’t look as great in real life. This can make even the most avid Internet shoppers avoid certain products and stick to known items. What about home design? Is it even possible to use the Internet as a resource to shop for and design your house? It certainly is. You might even be surprised by how many resources there are online to help save you money and time while helping you to design your kitchen like a pro.
Sources of Inspiration
The possibilities for finding design inspiration on the Internet are virtually endless. Some homeowners who are looking for home remodeling items online make the mistake of diving straight into the shopping process. Why not brainstorm a little beforehand? Think big before you start to zero in on individual products. One popular sites that features photo galleries of home designs is Pinterest. Type in, for example, “Shaker cabinets” and you’ll see images of kitchens as well as DIY projects all featuring Shaker cabinets. There’s even a Pinterest app. Houzz works on a similar principle as Pinterest, though with a more concentrated focus on design.
3-D Design
After you’ve gotten an idea of how you want your kitchen to look, you can take advantage of one especially exciting feature available online: 3-D kitchen design. All you need to do is enter your contact information and upload at least one of the following: a photo, blueprint, layout plan, or additional media. Then the design team will create a three-dimensional model of your kitchen, so you can envision how your new design will look in your kitchen.

Samples
If you are going to buy the items for your kitchen remodel online and you want to make sure what you’re getting will look good in your space, be sure to check if there are samples available. For example, when buying kitchen cabinets online, you can sometimes purchase a sample door before you commit to making a further investment.
Check Shipping Costs and Return Policies
Before buying products online, be sure to check if there is a FAQ page on the company website. This is where you should be able to find information about shipping costs, delivery times, cancellations, and returns. If you want to buy cabinets online, for example, or other large items such as major appliances, be sure to familiarize yourself with the company’s policies so you can be sure to know exactly what to expect.
Testimonials
Instead of hearing about stores by word of mouth, like in the old days, now we rely on testimonials from other customers to make sure the company we are buying from is trustworthy. Does the company have a social media presence, like a dedicated facebook page? You can often look for testimonials there, in addition to the company’s website.
Video Tutorials
If your virtual kitchen design project includes shopping for RTA kitchen cabinets online, you’ll want to get as much information as you can about the assembly process. What kinds of instructions come with the cabinets? And what kind of customer support can you expect? Fortunately, the Nelson Cabinetry team has created video tutorials that give you easy, step-by-step instructions for assembly, even before you buy any cabinets online.
If you keep these pointers in mind as you’re designing your kitchen, you’ll be able to make the most out of what design technology and the possibilities for online shopping have to offer.
