DIY Home Projects: Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

Do-it-yourself home projects can be a great way to save money and add some personality to your home. However, they can also be a huge headache if you make these common mistakes.

Do-it-yourself (DIY) projects can be a lot of fun, but they can also be quite challenging. If you’re not careful, you can easily make common mistakes that can end up costing you time and money. So, we asked some industry experts for their top tips on how you can avoid these pitfalls in your next project! Let’s get started!

    Bad Scheduling

Scheduling is an important part of any DIY project. If you don’t plan ahead, you can easily run into problems and end up wasting time. Make sure to allocate enough time for each step of the project, and be sure to leave a little extra time in case something goes wrong.

“The most common mistake made by DIY remodelers is scheduling. Make sure you have everything needed for the project before starting. A missing item can cause a cascading effect of delays. Also, never start a project on a weekend if you are not confident of your abilities. If a professional is needed, you will not reach one on a weekend.”

    Not Using Transition Points

The details of a DIY project can be the difference between a successful project and a mediocre one.

“Great cabinetry is essential for a well-crafted kitchen, but an easy and often overlooked enhancement to your renovation is to include thoughtful trim additions. Transition points between cabinets, windows, end caps, backsplash, and floors provide an opportunity to accentuate kitchen fixtures with a bespoke touch that will highlight your fixtures and prompt your guests to ask, “Who did you hire to do your kitchen renovation?”

    Selecting the Wrong Color

Color is one of the most important elements of design. It can be used to create a variety of moods and emotions, and it can also be used to influence people’s perceptions and reactions.

“Common mistake I often am asked to assist with: Thinking “all white paint” is alike?  Not knowing the “Pesky undertones” that will rear their ugly head once a space or room is painted. A simple question to ask yourself: Are my fixed elements i.e. flooring, cabinets, or counters “Warm” or “Cooler” temperature. Then selecting the proper color that “completes” does not “compete” with those elements. When in doubt, call a color expert that can save you time and money.”

    Not Knowing What You’re Doing

One of the most common mistakes people make when doing DIY home projects is not knowing what they’re doing. This can lead to projects that are completed poorly or, worse, that can be dangerous.

“One thing we see with DIY countertops, typically if people install them without properly reading up on the process first, is the tendency to nail, screw or glue stone and solid surfaces down. Doing this makes those heavy pieces even more difficult to remove, possibly resulting in damaged cabinetry or higher labor costs if you ever decide to replace them. This can be especially problematic if you’re planning to repurpose stone for another project afterward: if not properly installed, it will be more prone to damage upon removal and you’ll have less of a chance to salvage it. Usually, a bit of silicone around the edges is all you need, but always do research specific to your project – or better yet, contact a professional – before making any big countertop commitments!”

Other industry experts agree on this one – if you’re stuck, ask for help!

“If you’re stuck on a DIY project, don’t be afraid to ask for help. Hire a kitchen and bath designer to help you with your DIY home projects. A professional designer will have the knowledge and experience to help you complete your project safely and correctly, and they can also offer tips and advice to make sure your project turns out exactly the way you want it.”
