What is a Toe Kick and Do You Need One in the Kitchen

A toe kick is the raised strip of wood that runs under cabinets. It’s usually found in kitchens, but can also be used in bathrooms, pantries or other areas where you need some additional storage space. The goal of this article is to answer two questions: What does a toe kick do for you, and should you have one or not?

If you are remodeling your kitchen or building a new one, toe kicks can be an important part of the design. What is a toe kick? A toe kick is a strip of wood that runs along the bottom of kitchen cabinets to provide space for your toes when you’re standing in front of them. A toe kick can be installed anywhere, but most people put it at the back edge of the cabinet so they don’t hit their feet on it.

Understanding Kitchen Toe Kick

The toe kick is a great way to provide stability and style for your cabinets. A simple detail, but one that can make all of the difference in how well they’re received by homeowners! The toe kick on your kitchen cabinets may seem like an insignificant design detail, but it’s actually a helpful ergonomic feature. What does the toe kick do? It provides you with an extra place to put your feet while standing at a countertop or sink! You can position yourself closer to your work without slouching or bending over.

Toe Kick Height

One question we get a lot is what is a perfect toe kick height? The optimal height for a toe kick is 3-4.5 inches, but it’s not uncommon to see toe kicks over 5 inches as well. This provides an adequate recess to stand comfortably and maintain balance while working at a countertop, without sacrificing any visibility or workspace. Increasing the height over 5 inches does not hurt the effectiveness of the toe kick, but it may very slightly reduce the space in your base cabinet.
