Remodeling Your Kitchen? Read These Expert Advices!

So, you’re thinking of remodeling your kitchen. Whether you want to update the appliances, change the layout, or simply give the space a new look, there’s a lot to consider. Remodeling your kitchen is a big project. It can be overwhelming to think about all the details that need to be considered. To help you navigate the remodeling process, we asked a few experts for their advice.

Do Not Hesitate to Get Help Sizing the Cabinets Correctly

There’s nothing quite like the feeling of finally having your kitchen remodel complete. After weeks of construction dust and living off of take-out, you can now enjoy cooking in your beautiful new space. But as you stand in front of your new cabinets, admiring their sleek lines and stylish hardware, something feels off. They seem a little too small. And as you open the doors, you realize with a sinking feeling that you’ve made a huge mistake – the cabinets are the wrong size. Now you’re facing the nightmare scenario of delays, additional costs, and months of living in construction chaos all over again.

Make sure to measure your cabinet space correctly

“One of the best pieces of advice for remodeling kitchen cabinets I have is to not hesitate to get help sizing the cabinets correctly. After all, this can be an expensive investment for your home, and you deserve to end up with cabinets that fit the space correctly”, says Jen Stark from Happy DIY Home.

Make a point to ask yourself what is lacking with your current cabinets. Is it the height, depth, or width? Do you need more or less storage room?

“You also want to consider that most stock cabinets are roughly 12 to 36 inches wide and wall cabinets are 12 to 24 inches high. Think about how this will fit into your space”, continues Jen.

    Space Planning is Everything

A kitchen is one of the most important rooms in a house. It’s where families gather to prepare and enjoy meals, and it should be designed with both function and style in mind. Unfortunately, many kitchens are poorly planned, resulting in inefficient use of space and a less-than-optimal experience for those who use it. Interior designer Nancy Lupo knows everything about space planning, and she shared some tips with us!

A well-designed kitchen takes into account both your aesthetic preferences and your functional needs. When space planning, it’s important to consider where you will store all of your pots, pans, and small appliances; where your food will go; and how you want to flow through the room. If you have pets, you’ll need to make sure they have designated space as well; and if you have aging or mobility issues, you may want to consider lower countertops in some areas and a table-height island for easy sitting. Once you’ve decided on the big-picture layout, a kitchen specialist can help you choose the details that will complete the room, from cabinets and hardware to appliances and flooring.

    Identify Your Needs

Every family has different needs when it comes to their kitchen. Some may prioritize storage space, while others might need an extra-large fridge to accommodate their weekly grocery haul. That’s why it’s important to identify your needs first.

    Different homes have different needs

“Work out the size of the kitchen and the growing inventory that needs to fit in the space. Then you need to figure out what type of look you’re going for. If your kitchen is too small and cluttered, going brighter and lighter is the key to making it look spacious and airy. So go for lighter colors like white and yellow and mix and match materials to give your kitchen a nice uplift. You can change existing cabinet knobs and add different textures to give it a luxurious feel. You can also consider hanging floating shelves to get some of the essentials off the island”, says Chris Alexakis from Cabinet Select.

    Think About the Future

As you design your dream kitchen, it’s important to think about the future needs of your family. If you’re currently single or have a small family, you may be tempted to skimp on storage space in favor of a more open layout. However, it’s always worth considering how your needs may change over time. Health also comes to play.

I tell people who are looking to make remodeling decisions to think not only about current use, but also the future use needs. Nothing is worse than spending 15K on new cabinets/kitchen and realizing 6 yrs later they dont work for your needs any longer. I recommend anyone who has a progressive disorder, a chronic condition, or who are even 55+ to start thinking about FUNCTION as it relates to mobility, by getting a Home Safety Assessment from a trained medical professional.  They can review the medical needs, the projected disease or aging process and help an individual make solid decisions so the environment grows with them, and not against them”, says Dawn Heiderscheidt from Aurora Independence
