If you’ve ever stood in your kitchen and wondered what it would look like with navy blue cabinets… or maybe a soft sage green… you’re not alone. We’ve been down that rabbit hole, too. Instead of guessing (or making an expensive mistake), we tried out a bunch of apps that let you test out different cabinet colors virtually. Some were surprisingly helpful, others not so much. So to save you time and hassle, we’ve rounded up the ones we actually recommend. Whether you’re just dreaming or getting serious, here’s what’s worth trying.
Sherwin-Williams ColorSnap Visualizer
Best for: Trying out real paint colors on your actual kitchen
We liked ColorSnap because it’s super easy to use, you just upload a photo of your kitchen, and then tap on your cabinets to change the color. It uses real Sherwin-Williams paint options, so what you see is actually what you can buy. The color matching is pretty accurate, and you can adjust lighting to make it feel more realistic. It’s not a full kitchen redesign tool, but if you’re mainly focused on picking the right cabinet paint color, this one’s a winner. Bonus: It’s free and works on both desktop and mobile.
MSMV Design Software
Best for: Full kitchen design control with easy drag-and-drop tools
If you’re the type who wants to tweak every detail, cabinet color, layout, handles, backsplash, lighting, you’ll love MSMV Design Software. It gives you a surprising amount of control over your kitchen design, but the best part? It’s still super user-friendly. You can build your kitchen layout from scratch using simple drag-and-drop features, so even if you’re not a designer, it’s totally doable. It’s great for testing out cabinet colors and seeing how they play with your floors, counters, and appliances. Perfect if you’re serious about a remodel and want a full visual before making any big decisions.
ChatGPT
Best for: Fast, creative ideas with surprisingly realistic results
This one might surprise you, but yes, you can actually use ChatGPT to help you visualize new cabinet colors. Just upload a photo of your kitchen and write a simple prompt describing the look you’re going for. The results are pretty decent, especially if you just want to quickly see how a navy blue or forest green might look without downloading another app. It won’t give you pixel-perfect accuracy, but for brainstorming or inspo, it’s a solid (and fun) option.
Try this prompt:
“Change the color of my kitchen cabinets to matte black, keep the countertops white, and brighten the overall lighting.”
Tip: You can get creative with your prompts: mention specific styles, finishes, or even mood lighting.

Behr ColorSmart
Best for: Exploring Behr paint colors with a simple, no-fuss interface
Behr’s ColorSmart tool is a solid choice if you’re just starting to explore cabinet color ideas and want to keep things simple. You can upload a photo of your kitchen or use one of their sample rooms, then test out a wide range of Behr paint colors on your cabinets. The interface is pretty straightforward, not too fancy, but it gets the job done. We wouldn’t use it for a full kitchen redesign, but if you’re thinking about painting your cabinets and want to preview some shades from Behr’s lineup, it’s definitely worth a try.
