Ideas for Organizing Your Kitchen Cabinets

Do you follow that old saying “Out of sight, out of mind”? Well, you can use that with your closed cabinet doors, until one day you try to pull out a single pan, and a bunch of other lids and pots come crashing down on you. Even if you don’t have a ton of storage space, you can still help your kitchen live up to its full potential with these cabinet organization ideas.

    Declutter

This should be your first step in organizing your kitchen cabinets. Make sure to have a trash bin (but make sure to hide trash can, because it may not be as appealing) near you and a box for items to donate the stuff you don’t need anymore. Then, take everything out of your cabinets. Go through each item and either put whatever you don’t need anymoreeither in the trash or donation boxes. This way you’ll declutter your cabinets much more easily.

    Categorize

Don’t be overly concerned with appearance, because in this part function is most important. Separate the food items from the cookware, and right away you’ll have two groups. Also, you can categorize edible as drinks, snacks, canned goods, pasta, and other similar items. You can subdivide cookware into pans, pots, cutting boards, mugs, and glasses, etc.

Also, some items can be placed on your kitchen counter or somewhere else as well instead of in your cabinets. Of what’s left to be stored into cabinets, decide what’s best to store in upper cabinets and what in lower cabinets.

    • Food: Place your edible items just above the counter space you usually use when preparing food. It’ll be easier for you to access it while cooking. Also, the shaker pantry cabinet is even better for storing your food so you can free your other cabinet space.
    • Glasses and dishes: Place glasses and dishes above your sink or dishwasher so it’s easier for you to put those items away.
    • Food storage containers: Place food storage containers above the counter space you use for easy access.
    • Cookbooks

    Lower cabinets

    • Appliances: Place kitchen appliances in the lower cabinets unless you use an appliance daily, in which case it’s better to keep them on your countertop.
    • Pots, pans, and baking sheets: Place these items in the lower cabinets near your stove. A rack to store lids and baking sheets vertically is also helpful for maximizing space, as well as Lazy susan.
    • Bowls and cutting boards: Place these items in a lower cabinet closer to the drying rack or dishwasher for easier storage.
    • Cleaning supplies: This should preferably be placed under the sink. If you have small children or pets, consider a child-proof lock on the cabinet. Avoid placing cleaning supplies above or on the same shelf as food.

    Group

Start with placing your similar items next to one another. It’ll help you streamline to your entire pantry organization. This is a great way to organize your pantry efficiently. Also, organize your items based on how frequently you use them. For example, those you use daily should be located in the front and be close to one another; others things you use less frequently should go farther in the back. Lastly, think about your routines and a place for your sports drinks and energy bars.

    Develop a system

The pantry is made for effective and efficient storage. Having an organizational system in place for your pantry will also make your pantry look nice and clean.

    Jars

Mason jars can be one of the best storage solutions for your pantry. They are very helpful storage solutions. They can increase the space you have in your pantry and keep everything super organized in the process.

    Jar labels

Be sure to properly label any jars in your pantry space for quicker access.. Also, be careful not to mislabel them, otherwise  you might end up pouring sugar into the coffee maker on a particulary tired morning! Do yopurself a favor and make everything simple and easy to access.

    Non-food items

Did you hear about the new trendy pantry feature It’s a counter for small appliances. This is a great way to keep those items—rice cookers, blenders, mixers, etc.—off your countertops. (Bonus points for equipping your pantry with an electrical outlet so that you can even use your small appliances in there.)

    Bottom line

At the end of the day, even though it may take some time, organizing your pantry is likely easier than you think. Also, getting the job done can provide you with the space you didn’t even know you needed. More importantly,  it will be a great feeling to know that your pantry is organized and ready for a new chapter this year.

Finally, plan to go through your kitchen cabinets at least once or twice a year. If you want to keep your cabinets organized and neat, you have to make sure everyone in your household keeps them organized. Make sure that everyone knows where each item should go, and you’ll be fine.
