A vessel sink is positioned on top of or partially on top of a countertop instead of fitting into it, as with a drop-in sink. Some models will fit into a recess in the countertop specially designed for this purpose. In both instances, vessel sinks will be higher than the countertop, and this gives a high level of flexibility in terms of design, as vessel sinks can be of almost any shape.
