Sapwood

Sapwood comes from the outer part of a tree and is softer than the heartwood, which is located at the tree’s core. Sapwood is usually lighter in color than the heartwood. The sapwood serves to transport water from the roots to the tree’s leaves and for this reason is high in moisture content. It therefore needs to be dried properly before being used in woodworking to ensure that it does not shrink or rot.
