    Open Grain

    Open grain wood has larger pores and includes such species as oak, ash, and elm. Open grain woods will frequently need to have a filler applied to ensure that a finish goes on smooth. Woods with individual grains of wood that are smaller are called “closed grain.” When a highly smooth, lustrous surface is desired, closed grain is a better option.
