In cabinets, a mortise is a cut in the wood that a hinge leaf mounts on, and mortise hinges are designed for the both leaves of the hinge to be mortised onto the door frame. No mortise or non-mortise hinges, however, do not need to be mortised onto the door frame and can bolted directly onto the frame.
