A lap joint, or overlap joint, features overlapping components and is used in woodworking as well as for joining plastic and metal. A full lap is thicker than a half lap because there is no material removed, and the resulting thickness equals the thickness of both pieces combined. This is an especially strong type of joint in terms of resistance to shear, or perpendicular, forces.
