    Grain

In woodworking, the term grain refers to direction of the wood cells. The distinction between “fine” and “coarse” grain refers to the size of these cells and how they are arranged in the rays, or the alternations between light and dark in a piece of wood. In fine grain wood, these bands are close together while in coarse grain wood, they are further apart.
