“Finishing” the wood is one of the last steps, not surprisingly, in the manufacturing of wood and actually consists of several different steps. These include sanding, which helps to smooth the surface, eliminating stains and bleaching, staining, and generally preparing the wood to be coated with the actual “finish,” which include wax, paint, or varnish.
