In cross grain wood, the grain lines do not run parallel to the long edge of the piece of wood, as is the case with straight grain wood, but instead perpendicularly. The wood is still regular, however, because the plane of the cut is aligned with the lines of the grain. Plywood, which is used frequently in cabinetry, is one example of cross grain wood.
